Tutorial 01: Enhancing or Changing Eye Color

I have several tutorials that I have written for my group Retouch Magic on Flickr. I thought I would start posting some of these here to share as well.

Enhancing or Changing Eye Color
By: Rebecca Richardson

STEP 1
Select the lasso or marquee tool and draw a circular selection around each eye. See Fig 1

Marquee/Lasso Tool Tip: Holding the SHIFT key while make a selection allows you to add either to your current selection or make a different selection at the same time (ie both eyes) Holding the ALT key will allow you to deselect pieces or parts which helps with fine tuning.

STEP 2
We need to put the selected eyes onto a new layer to work with them individually. Make sure you name your layers regardless of which method below you use.

We can do this one of 2 ways:
A Use a keyboard shortcut: CTRL + J or

B Do the following using the screenshots below:
copylayerpastelayer

STEP 3
Now that you have the eyes in a seperate layer the real magic begins. The following screen shots will walk you through the steps.

Designers Notes: Keep in mind that all eye color enhancing is subjective. The colors shown here worked for this particular subject, however, you have to use your best judgement for each individual photo. Also, don't be afraid to play with blending modes or even gradients. The specs shown on these screen shots are what worked for this particular photo. You will learn to trust your own instincts as you work on different photo subjects

Fig 3.3: Select Color Overlay: These are the colors I used

STEP 4
After you are satisfied with the way the colors are blending, hit ok and preview your image at full size to make sure the results are natural looking. That's it! From here make sure you save your image with a new name so that your original is always available for reference if you need it.
